Durango Public Schools and Real Food Colorado produced the Durango Farm to School Conference in 2011 and 2013. The Southwest Colorado Farm to School Conferences addressed key barriers that can often inhibit small- and mid-sized farms’ ability to develop proper food safety protocols and agricultural practices in order to supply fresh produce and other products to local school districts. The one-day conference included Food Service Directors from school districts in La Plata and Montezuma counties as well as approximately 30 small- and mid-sized farmers from Southwest Colorado. This regional gathering allowed Food Service Directors and Farmers to design a set of Handling and Delivery protocols so both parties are able to establish Standard Operation Procedures that are accessible by both parties. The end result allowed more CO farmers access to institutional purchases. The overall benefit will allow CO schools and for CO students to have greater access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
